With so much natural beauty, there’s no doubt that you will want to start mountaineering and hiking near King Salmon, Alaska. We know of some fantastic areas to hike while you stay at Alaska’s Gold Creek Lodge. So when you need a break from the great fishing, please check out at least one of these mountains and gain a new perspective on your surroundings.

Mount Griggs

This peak is on the northeast side of the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes. It’s technically a volcano (a stratovolcano to be exact), which explains its former name, “Knife Peak Volcano.” This mount will give you a unique experience. If you make it near the peak, you will see hot gasses leaking from the mountain. Maybe you’ll even hear the gasses escaping from below you.

Mount Katmai

This is another stratovolcano, meaning that it’s still active, and you will probably see lots of gas and heat. Similar to Mount Griggs, this unique area was formed during the Novarupta eruption of 1912. If you are interested in mountaineering and hiking in Alaska, this is a destination that you will want to plan a visit around.

Dumpling Mountain

The hike to Dumpling Mountain is a beautiful experience. Lush grass and wildflowers fill the forest floor. Reaching the top of Dumpling Mountain is another reward. You will be able to see Brooks River and the vast alpine tundra.
